Celebrating 35 Years in Ju-Jitsu

This year marks my 35th year in Ju-Jitsu—a journey that began in 1991 and has become one of the most important and defining parts of my life.

Over those years, Ju-Jitsu has given me far more than technical knowledge, rank, or recognition. It has taught me discipline, perseverance, loyalty, humility, and the responsibility that comes with leadership. It has introduced me to lifelong friends, exceptional instructors, and thousands of students who have each contributed to my development as a martial artist and teacher.

In 1998, I founded Goshinkan-Ryu Ju-Jitsu®. What began as a vision for a practical and effective system has grown into dojos and students across Canada and beyond. I have had the privilege of developing instructors, promoting black belts, teaching seminars, supporting other martial arts organizations, and helping students of all ages discover their own strength and confidence.

Throughout my journey, I have also had the honour of teaching many police officers and other law-enforcement professionals. Sharing practical self-defence skills with those who protect our communities has been an especially meaningful part of my martial arts career. My own experience in law enforcement has further reinforced the importance of realistic, effective, and responsible training.

Some of my greatest rewards have come from watching students grow—not only as martial artists but also as people. Many young students have developed into confident adults, instructors, and leaders who are now passing their knowledge and values on to the next generation.

I would like to offer special thanks to my instructor and mentor, Shihan Chris Bissett, Soke. His knowledge, leadership, guidance, and friendship have played an important role in my development throughout this journey. I remain grateful for everything he has taught me and for the example he continues to provide.

After 35 years, I remain a student of Ju-Jitsu. I continue to learn, evolve, and recognize that every instructor and student has something valuable to teach. My commitment remains the same: to preserve the traditions and standards of Goshinkan while continuing to improve the system for future generations.

I am deeply grateful to my instructors, family, black belts, students, and friends who have shared this journey with me. Thirty-five years have passed quickly, but my work is not finished. There is still much more to teach, learn, build, and pass on.

The journey continues.
